NEXT STEPS FOR ADMITTED CoE TRANSFER STUDENTS

Below is a summary of important action items and the process for meeting progression in your selected engineering program:

Follow the steps on the admitted transfer checklist (and the additional checklist items for international students, if applicable): https://admissions.wisc.edu/admitted-transfer-checklist/

To continue towards graduation requirements in your program, you must satisfy progression requirements. Submission of the transfer progression application initiates a review process to determine whether you have satisfied the progression requirements before transfer, or whether you will need to satisfy progression requirements after transfer according to the College of Engineering Official Regulations (Regulations 3-7) in order to remain in your selected engineering program.

This application is due by NOON on June 1 (for fall admission) or January 1 (for spring admission). The application requires you to indicate the engineering program listed on your admissions letter from the Office of Admissions and Recruitment* and to submit two brief essays and an optional essay explaining why you chose this program. Your essays will help the faculty committee understand more about you, who you are, and what you hope to accomplish as an engineering student in their department.

*Note: You must begin in the major to which you have been offered admission by the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, and you must follow the curriculum effective at the time of your admission into the degree-granting program. At the point of transfer, you may only submit an application to be considered for progression into the engineering program to which you have been offered admission. Do not select a different major in the transfer progression application system. If your engineering interests change after you meet progression in your selected program, there is a process for departmental students to apply to another engineering program. However, switching cannot be guaranteed and might be unlikely for competitive programs with more limited capacity. For students wanting to switch between engineering departments, the progression GPA requirements are advisory only.

Essay Directions:
• Your response should not exceed the number of words specified for each essay.
• Compose your essays in a word-processing program to take advantage of spelling and grammar tools.
• Once you are satisfied with your essays, save each one in plain text and paste each one into the space provided on the supplemental application. Proofread once more for content or formatting errors.
• You may enter and exit the application before officially submitting it. Just to be safe: If you compose your essays on the form, avoid losing anything by copying and saving the text before exiting.

Tips:
• As you compose your essays, think about the faculty committee members who will be reading your responses. What do you want them to understand about you and your aspirations in engineering?
• Take your time. Be open. Be reflective. Be specific. Solicit feedback from the writing center on your campus.
• Proofread. Allow time for revision. After you submit the supplemental application, you will receive a confirmation email with reminders about next steps.

If you have courses in progress, the Office of Admissions and Recruitment requires that you must maintain your current course enrollment and grades or your admission for the upcoming semester may be cancelled. Correspondingly, to ensure a successful transition to engineering studies, the CoE requires a minimum 3.0 term GPA prior to transfer, with no grades below a C (2.0 on 4.0 scale).
If you have any concerns, email both onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu and ugtransfer@engr.wisc.edu .

1) Email your unofficial transcript to the CoE: ugtransfer@engr.wisc.edu. You must do this to be considered for satisfying the progression requirements for your selected engineering program before transfer. Deadline: NOON on June 1 (for fall admission) or January 1 (for spring admission). Please notify ugtransfer@engr.wisc.edu if your final grades are not available until after the deadline because you are transferring from a quarter system school.
2) Send a final official transcript to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, and be prepared to self-report your final grades if prompted.

For students transferring into any of CoE’s 13 degree-granting engineering programs, the approval process for meeting progression requirements prior to transfer is competitive and selective. To make the progression determination, the engineering program uses a holistic review process to consider your academic course preparation (including breadth and depth of subjects, rigor of course work, and pattern and trend of grades), final grades for the most recent term, essays in the supplemental transfer progression application, and the original admission application materials you had submitted to the university. In early-July (for fall admission) or late-January (for spring admission), the CoE will contact you by email to confirm that you will begin in your selected program. The email will also indicate your progression status in that program. The progression decision will be one of the following:
• (A) You have satisfied the progression requirements before transfer. You will begin in your selected program knowing that you may continue in the program having to meet only the graduation requirements.
• (B) You must now satisfy the progression requirements after transfer. You will still begin in your selected program, and you will take courses that fulfill the progression requirements and engineering degree requirements, including available courses in your department. However, to continue in the program, you must satisfy the progression requirements within two semesters in residency. You should also take time to develop a parallel plan by exploring the variety of engineering programs and other majors on campus.

Important Considerations for Transfer Students Who Must Satisfy the Progression Requirements After Transfer

As a transfer student, you may be considered for satisfying the progression requirements after your first semester in residence if you are enrolled full-time and in two core courses, and if you are making progress toward fulfilling degree requirements for the specified major. Because you will have only one semester of grades at UW-Madison on record for the departmental committee to consider, progression approval cannot be guaranteed even if the engineering major GPA requirements are met. If not approved for progression after one semester, you may reapply for progression again the following semester without any penalty. The requirement will still be in effect to satisfy within two semesters of residency the credit, course, and GPA requirements.

You are responsible for knowing the progression requirements for your engineering major and for your alternate engineering majors of interest. All CoE students are assigned to a professional advisor and/or a faculty advisor in their major. Your advisor(s) will be readily available to discuss your interests and goals, the various engineering programs, curriculum requirements, course choices, and the progression requirements. You will have access to free academic support resources and programming in the CoE. You should also meet with advisors across campus to expand your interests and explore majors outside of the CoE.

You will need to achieve high grades at UW-Madison to satisfy the progression requirements for CoE majors. Your transfer courses and credits will be considered, but only UW-Madison grades are included in the GPA calculations.

Expect to put more time than anticipated into your courses. Engineering study is interesting and rewarding—and rigorous. CoE students are required to maintain a full-time course load (a minimum of 12 credits), and most courses take place on weekdays. It can be difficult to commute or to work more than ten hours/week, especially in the first semester. Using academic support services, joining study groups, and consulting instructors during office hours are fundamental to the engineering student experience.

After transfer, you may continue towards graduation in a CoE program only if you satisfy the progression requirements after one or two semesters in residency at UW-Madison. You should transfer to the CoE only if you are willing to expand your interests and keep your options open. While taking steps to meet the progression requirements, you must make parallel plans toward other majors in engineering and across campus.

All new students must attend the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program. At Transfer SOAR you will meet with engineering faculty, staff, and peer advisors to discuss your interests, transfer credits, and engineering program. You will receive your transfer credit evaluation and a degree audit report that shows how your transfer credits fulfill curriculum requirements. You will register for courses that will help you make progress towards degree requirements. You will learn about academic and career resources in CoE and across campus. If you attend SOAR before progression decisions are released and your progression application is later approved, you can consult with your advisor after SOAR to adapt your schedule if needed. You will likely need to make few changes to your schedule, if any. Your advisor’s name will appear on your MyUW Student Center after SOAR. For best success, make an advising appointment early in your first semester and again before registering for future semesters. You can continue to discuss your interests, course options and curricula, your academic progress, and resources that best fit your needs. If you have any concerns or accomplishments to share, contact your advisor immediately. As you work toward completing your degree requirements, you should be aware of the College's Regulations, particularly as they relate to minimum credit load (Regulation 9.B.), academic standing (Regulations 32 – 35), and graduation requirements (Regulations 39 – 40). You can find the College of Engineering Regulations at http://UGregulations.engr.wisc.edu .

Again, congratulations on your admission! We look forward to meeting and welcoming all of our incoming transfer students at the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program.
